Access requirements for emergency services

Emergency Services Site Access

What happens when your scheme has secure access or security gates, and the emergency services need access?

FIRE

Usually, fire panels, when triggered, directly alert the Fire Brigade to attend. The security gate may be deactivated when this happens. It may be prudent to determine the setup with the schemes fire services provider. In the event of an emergency, the Fire Brigade may need to damage common property to gain access.

‘In the majority of these types of buildings, once the local Fire Alarm activates the sliding security gates should open automatically to allow people to evacuate the building. On smaller complexes this may not be the case, however unless the building is monitored by a direct brigade alarm, we do not store this information’.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services on (DFES) 9395 9300 should also be updated with emergency access details.

POLICE

The local police station servicing the scheme, would need to be provided with a lockbox code, in order to gain access, in the event of an emergency. It would be the Strata Company’s responsibility to ensure that their local police station is kept up to date, when the code or security access details change.

AMBULANCE

St John Ambulance do keep a register of lockbox codes, to assist in gaining access, in the event of an emergency. It would be the Strata Company’s responsibility to ensure that the register is kept up to date, by completing the form, and returning it to them.

Below is a copy of our St John Ambulances Lockbox information sheet and a statement from tehir site.
